Garden Designer in Cambridge

Robert Barker is an RHS Gold Medal winning garden designer working across Cambridge and the surrounding areas of Cambridgeshire. He specialises in creating thoughtful, elegant gardens that feel both natural and carefully considered, balancing strong structure with beautiful planting.

Every garden is designed to reflect the character of the house, the surrounding landscape and the people who will use it. Whether the garden is a compact town space or a larger country plot, the aim is always the same – to create a garden that feels calm, timeless and enjoyable throughout the seasons.

Robert works closely with clients from the early ideas through to the completed garden, ensuring the design develops into a space that feels personal, practical and lasting.

Garden Design in Cambridge

Cambridge has a wonderful variety of gardens, from traditional town gardens behind period terraces to larger plots on the edge of the city and surrounding villages. Each setting brings its own opportunities and challenges, whether it is working with mature trees, heavy clay soils or creating privacy in a more compact space.

Robert approaches every project with careful attention to the architecture of the house and the wider setting. Materials, planting and layout are all considered together so that the garden feels as though it naturally belongs to the property.

Many Cambridge gardens benefit from strong structural planting, natural materials and a balance between open space and carefully framed views. The aim is always to create a garden that feels calm and welcoming while also being practical for everyday use.

Our Garden Design Process

Every project begins with an initial conversation and site visit to understand how you would like to use your garden and what atmosphere you would like it to have. This early stage helps to explore ideas, understand the site conditions and begin shaping the direction of the design.

Following this, a detailed design is developed which may include layout plans, planting ideas and material selections. The aim is to create a design that feels cohesive and realistic, while still allowing the garden to evolve naturally over time.

Once the design is complete, Robert can work alongside experienced landscapers and planting specialists to help ensure the garden is built and planted in a way that reflects the original vision.

Recent Cambridge Garden Projects

Recent projects include gardens within Cambridge itself as well as several surrounding villages. These gardens vary from contemporary town gardens designed to create a sense of space and calm, through to more naturalistic planting schemes in larger rural settings.

Each project begins with understanding how the garden will be used, whether that is for quiet relaxation, entertaining, family life or simply enjoying the changing seasons. By combining thoughtful layout with carefully chosen materials and planting, the finished garden becomes a natural extension of the home.

Examples of recent work can be seen in the portfolio, where different projects show how the design approach adapts to suit each site and client.

Areas Covered Across Cambridgeshire

Although many projects are based in Cambridge, Robert regularly works across Cambridgeshire and the surrounding region. This includes nearby villages and towns such as Grantchester, Trumpington, Girton, Histon, Fulbourn, Ely and Newmarket.

The character of these locations varies greatly, from historic village gardens to newer properties and larger countryside plots. Each site brings different possibilities for planting, layout and structure, and these are carefully considered as part of the design process.

Robert also undertakes projects further afield across Hertfordshire, Suffolk and London, but Cambridge and the surrounding Cambridgeshire villages remain a central part of the work.
